If you love vintage shopping, treasure hunting, and finding unique second-hand bargains, then a visit to the IJ-Hallen should definitely be on your Amsterdam itinerary.
Located at the creative NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam Noord, the IJ-Hallen is the largest flea market in Europe and attracts thousands of visitors every month. Whether you’re looking for vintage clothing, home décor, records, books, or simply want to spend a fun morning browsing through hundreds of stalls, the IJ-Hallen is one of my favourite budget-friendly activities in Amsterdam.
I have visited several times over the years and have even sold my own clothes there once, so here is everything you need to know before visiting.
What are the IJ-Hallen?
The IJ-Hallen are Europe’s largest flea market, with up to 750 stalls depending on the weekend. The market takes place roughly once a month at the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam Noord.
You’ll find a mix of professional vintage sellers and everyday people clearing out their wardrobes, attics, and garages. In my experience, the best bargains are often found at the stalls run by private sellers, as they just want to make some space in their closet and get rid of their items.
Expect to find:
- Vintage and second-hand clothing
- Shoes and accessories
- Home décor and furniture
- Books and records
- Collectibles and antiques
- Plenty of random treasures you didn’t know you needed
Like any flea market, it’s a bit hit-or-miss, but that’s also what makes it fun.
How to Get to the IJ-Hallen
Getting to the IJ-Hallen is surprisingly easy.
First, make your way to Amsterdam Centraal Station. From there, head to the back of the station towards the water. This is where you’ll find the free ferries that connect Amsterdam Centraal with Amsterdam Noord.
You’ll want to take the ferry to NDSM Wharf (NDSM-werf). It is completely free and typically runs every 15 minutes during the day. It is the ferry all the way on the left, and it will say ‘NDSM’ on the display. The ferry ride is around 10 minutes.
Once you arrive at NDSM Wharf, it’s only a short 3 to 5-minute walk to the entrance of the IJ-Hallen. Honestly, if you’re visiting on a market day, you can simply follow the crowds.
When Does the IJ-Hallen Take Place?
The IJ-Hallen usually takes place once a month over a weekend. Dates change throughout the year, so I recommend checking the official calendar before your visit.
Indoor vs Outdoor Markets
One thing worth knowing is that the layout changes depending on the season.
- During spring and summer, the market is usually held outdoors.
- During autumn and winter, it moves inside the large NDSM warehouse.
- Sometimes there is a combination of both indoor and outdoor sections
IJ-Hallen Tickets and Entrance Fees
Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance.
The standard entrance fee is usually €6.50 for adults, and the price is the same whether you buy online or at the venue. There is no need to prebook tickets, it doesn’t sell out.
The main advantage of buying online is that you can simply scan your QR code and walk straight in. If you buy your ticket on-site, you may have to wait in line first. Get your tickets here!
There is also an Early Bird ticket available for visitors who want first access to the stalls before the official opening time. These tickets cost €11 but allow entry from 06:00.
What Time Should You Arrive?
If you’re serious about finding the best bargains, arrive early.
The regular market usually opens at 09:00 and runs until around 16:30.
But of course the later you arrive, the fewer nice things you will find.
That said, there is another strategy: visit later in the afternoon. Sellers often don’t want to take everything home again and may lower their prices towards the end of the day.
Bring Cash
The Netherlands is practically cashless these days, but the IJ-Hallen is one of the few places where I would strongly recommend bringing cash.
Many sellers accept Tikkie payments, but not everyone does. The food trucks on-site actually also only accept cash.
There is an ATM in the Albert Heijn that you will pass when coming from the ferry terminal, but queues can get very long on market days because everyone suddenly remembers they need cash.
Save yourself the hassle and withdraw some money beforehand.
Are the IJ-Hallen Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s simply a fun day out. The atmosphere is great, there’s always something interesting to look at, and you never know what hidden gem you might find.
I’ve found everything from vintage clothing to books and unique home décor items here. Every visit is completely different because the sellers change all the time.

Can You Sell Your Own Clothes at the IJ-Hallen?

If you’re planning to book a stall, don’t wait too long. Spaces are popular and often sell out weeks or even months in advance. You’ll want to reserve your spot through the official website as early as possible.
Selling at the IJ-Hallen is a great way to declutter your wardrobe while making a bit of extra money.
