Visiting the Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan, South Korea

If you are visiting South Korea’s second-largest city, then visiting the beautiful Gamcheon culture village in Busan is one of the must-see activities. And while there are plenty of other things to see and do in Busan, a visit to the city is not complete without also including the cultural village.

This area in Busan used to be one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the city, but has been through a complete transformation back in 2009, when local artists added artwork, sculptures, and murals. Empty houses were turned into cafés and galleries.

This drew in a lot of tourists, who wanted to see the art and colourful houses. Gamcheon is now a popular cultural and artistic hub.

How to get to the Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan

There are a lot of different ways to get here, and of course it also depends on where you are coming from. There are quite some bus connection within Busan, ut I always find it easiest to cover the long distances by metro first.

For that, take the Line 1 to Jagalshi Station. If you are coming from Gwangali or Haeundae you first need to take Line 2 to Seomyeon station and then switch from there to Line 1.

Then from Jagalshi station walk to the Chugmu market bus stop and take the bus 202-2A for 7 stops and get off at Gamjeong elementary school. Now you are right at the entrance of the Gamcheon culture village.

Keep in mind that Busan is a huge city, and travelling from Haeundae beach to Gamcheon culture village will already take you around 1.5 hours.

What is there to do at the Gamcheon culture village?

You can find street art, delicious food and many view points overlooking the whole village, the sea, and the harbour. There are also plenty of souvenir shops and art galleries. You can also rent a Hanbok, which is traditional Korean clothing. Taking pictures in a Hanbok will make for some unforgettable memories.

Visiting the Gamcheon culture village is one of the best things to do in Busan. So, even if you only have one day in Busan, make sure to include it in your Busan itinerary. However, it is not a full day activity, so you can easily combine it with visiting some of Busan’s other must-see attractions. Plan to spend around 2–3 hours at the village.

What other places can you visit near the Gamcheon Culture Village?

There are a couple of attractions in downtown Busan that I would suggest visiting on the same day as Gamcheon Culture Village. For a perfect day in Busan, start by heading to the free viewing platform on the 13th floor of the Lotte Department Store next to Nampo Station.

After that, check out BIFF square, Gukje market and the Jagalshi fish market. These attractions are all within walking distance of each other. You can then take a bus to the Gamcheon Cultural Village, or walk. However, keep in mind that the path is uphill. In the evening, head to the Busan Tower for sunset and then end the day with some dinner and drinks at either Heaundae beach or Gwangali beach.
