If you’re flying into Faro and planning to explore the Algarve, chances are you’ll end up heading to Lagos at some point.
While Faro is usually the gateway to the region thanks to its airport, Lagos is where many travellers choose to spend most of their time. With stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, coastal walks, boat tours, kayaking trips, and a charming old town, it’s easy to see why.
The good news is that getting from Faro to Lagos is incredibly easy. The train is affordable, comfortable, and one of the simplest ways to travel around the Algarve without renting a car.
Here’s everything you need to know about taking the train from Faro to Lagos.
Why Visit Lagos?
For many travellers, Faro is simply the arrival point because that’s where the airport is located. Lagos, on the other hand, is often the highlight of a trip to the Algarve. It is one of the most beautiful beach towns, with a lot to do, and can easily be reached by train from Faro.
Some of the best things to do in Lagos include:
- Visiting the famous Ponta da Piedade cliffs
- Walking along the stunning coastline
- Relaxing on beaches like Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo
- Going kayaking through sea caves
- Taking a boat tour along the coast
- Joining a dolphin watching excursion
- Exploring the charming old town
- And there is also a lot of nightlife
If you’re only choosing one destination in the Algarve, I’d personally pick Lagos.

How to Get from Faro Airport to Faro Train Station
Before taking the train to Lagos, you’ll first need to get from Faro Airport to Faro Train Station.
Luckily, the airport is located very close to the city centre.
By Uber
The easiest option is to take an Uber.
The journey typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes and usually costs somewhere between €5 and €8, depending on demand and traffic.
During my trip, I found Uber surprisingly affordable, especially compared to many other European destinations.
If you’re travelling with other people, splitting the fare often makes it barely more expensive than public transport.
Can You Walk from Faro Airport?
Technically, yes.
Faro Airport is close enough to the city that walking is possible. The journey takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes depending on your pace and exactly where you’re staying.
I actually tried this when I arrived and walked from the airport to my accommodation in Faro.
However, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.
The problem isn’t the distance. The route itself just isn’t particularly pleasant. There aren’t pavements the entire way, and in some places you’ll find yourself walking alongside roads or over gravel sections.
I was travelling with a small carry-on suitcase and dragging it across some of those uneven areas wasn’t exactly fun.
If you’re travelling with just a backpack and don’t mind a longer walk, it’s definitely doable. But considering how affordable Uber is in Faro, most travellers will probably find it worth spending a few extra euros.
Where Is Faro Train Station?
Faro Train Station is conveniently located within walking distance of Faro Old Town. From most accommodation in the city centre, it’s only around a five-minute walk.
The station itself is small and easy to navigate, there are not many trains leaving from here.
How Often Do Trains Run from Faro to Lagos?
Trains run multiple times throughout the day, usually around 13 times daily.
That means you don’t need to worry too much about catching a specific departure. If you miss one train, there’s normally another one a few hours later.

A one-way ticket costs approximately €9.
You can either buy your ticket at the station or book online in advance. I just booked my ticket online which was very convenient.

How Long Does the Train from Faro to Lagos Take?
The train journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Along the way, the train stops at several destinations across the Algarve, including:
- Tunes
- Portimão
- Lagoa
They don’t announce the stops, but Lagos is the last stop. The journey is pretty straightforward!
Bring Water During Summer
One thing I would definitely recommend is bringing water.
The Algarve gets extremely hot during summer and so do the trains, and you’ll appreciate having a cold drink with you during the journey.
What Is the Train Like?
I found the train comfortable and easy to use.
There were plenty of seats available during my journey, and boarding was incredibly straightforward.
Unlike airports, there are no security checks, long queues, or complicated boarding procedures.
You don’t need to arrive particularly early. Usually, you can simply walk to the platform a few minutes before departure and get on the train.
Arriving at Lagos Train Station
Lagos Train Station is located right next to the marina. This is where many boat tours and excursions depart from, making it a convenient location for visitors.
From the station, it’s approximately a 15 to 20-minute walk to Lagos Old Town, where most hotels, hostels, restaurants, and attractions are located.
The walk is mostly flat and easy to navigate.
Where to Stay in Faro
Hostellicious
I’ve stayed at Hostellicious and would definitely recommend it. Compared to many budget hostels, it feels a little more premium. The beds were comfortable, the facilities were modern, and everything felt clean and well-maintained.
If you’re spending one night in Faro before heading elsewhere in the Algarve, this would be my top choice (or also if you stay longer)

Where to Stay in Lagos
Sol a Sol Hostel
During my stay in Lagos, I stayed at Sol a Sol Hostel. The location is excellent and within walking distance of pretty much everything you’ll need.
What I liked most was:
- Great location
- Relaxed atmosphere
- Rooftop terrace
- Easy access to tours and activities
- Not a party hostel

Best Things to Do in Lagos
Visit Ponta da Piedade
The famous rock formations and viewpoints at Ponta da Piedade are easily one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve.
Go Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the coastline and sea caves around Lagos. You can enter lots of places that the boats can not reach properly.

Join a Dolphin Watching Tour
Several companies operate dolphin watching trips directly from Lagos Marina. And they also combine it with exploring some of the caves, which is super goal!

Walk the Coastal Trail
One of my favourite free activities in Lagos was simply walking along the coastline.
The views are incredible, and you’ll pass some of the region’s most beautiful beaches.
Spend a Day at the Beach
I think that’s a given, but you will probably be spending a lot of time at the beach. Some of the best beaches in Lagos include:
