If there’s one attraction in Chongqing that completely surprised me, it was the Skywalk at Raffles City. While everyone talks about Hongya Cave or the city’s incredible skyline, standing on top of Raffles City is actually one of the best places to view Chongqing’s incredible skyline. Especially at night!
You can also just visit the observation deck to enjoy the panoramic views of the city, or if you’re looking for a bit more adventure, then definitely check out the Skywalk. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Chongqing!

Where is the Chongqing Exploration Deck?
The Exploration Deck is located inside Raffles City Chongqing, one of the city’s most iconic buildings right where the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers meet.
Finding the entrance can be a little confusing the first time, as it’s inside the shopping centre rather than outside the building. Once you’re inside Raffles City, follow the signs to the Exploration Deck and take the dedicated lift up to the ticketing area.
I’d recommend allowing around two hours for your visit, just to be sure, if you’re doing both the viewing platform and the Skywalk.

Opening hours
The Exploration Deck is open daily from:
10:00 AM – 11:00 PM
The best time to visit is just before sunset. That way you’ll get to see Chongqing during daylight before watching the entire city light up after dark. In my opinion, Chongqing has one of the most impressive skylines in the world, and it becomes even more magical once the lights come on.
However, the last entrance to the Skywalk will close earlier, so I would aim to be there before 9:00 PM.
How to book tickets
The easiest option is to book your tickets in advance on Trip.com.
You can also buy tickets at the entrance, but you may need to queue, especially during weekends and holidays. Booking online saves time and keeps all your bookings in one place. You also don’t need to select a specific time slot when booking; just the correct day is enough.

- Exploration Deck + Sky Swing: €23.31
Adding the Skywalk to the general ticket only adds a little bit more to the exploration deck ticket that you will need anyway, so I would definitely recommend doing that!
What is the Chongqing Skywalk like?
The Skywalk was honestly one of my favourite experiences in Chongqing.
After checking in, you’ll be fitted with a full safety harness before heading up onto the rooftop of Raffles City’s famous horizontal skyscraper. Throughout the entire experience, you’re securely attached to a safety cable, so although you’re walking hundreds of metres above the ground, you always feel safe.
Before going up, you’ll need to leave almost all of your belongings in a locker. The only thing you’re allowed to take is your phone, which goes into a transparent pouch attached securely to your harness.
Once you’re outside, you’ll walk along the centre section of the rooftop with absolutely incredible views over Chongqing in every direction. On the return journey, the route takes you much closer to the edge of the building, giving you a completely different perspective of the city below.
Although it looks quite intimidating in photos, I actually didn’t find it particularly scary. The staff is with you throughout the experience, you’re securely clipped in at all times, and you move slowly as a group.
The official duration is around 30 minutes, but I’d allow a little longer. Depending on how busy it is, you may spend some time waiting for the group ahead before moving on. I think when I went it definitely took a bit longer as there was some waiting involved.
Is the Exploration Deck worth visiting without the Skywalk?
It definitely is, but I do think it would be a shame to miss out on the Skywalk, as it is such a unique and fun experience!
But if heights aren’t really your thing, the viewing platform alone is still well worth visiting.
The indoor observation deck offers spectacular 360-degree views across Chongqing’s rivers, bridges and skyline. One of the highlights is the large glass floor section where you’ll be given protective shoe covers before walking across it.
It’s a fun experience even if you decide to skip the rooftop adventure.
What else is there to do nearby?
One of the best things about visiting the Exploration Deck is that it’s surrounded by some of Chongqing’s top attractions.
You can spend some time exploring Raffles City Shopping Mall, which has plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants, before heading outside to enjoy the waterfront.
This is also one of the best areas to take a Yangtze River cruise, especially in the evening when the city lights reflect on the water. Even if you don’t take a cruise, simply walking around the riverside after sunset is an experience in itself.

Final thoughts
Whether you’re looking for incredible skyline views or want to experience walking on top of one of Chongqing’s most iconic buildings, the Exploration Deck is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
The observation deck alone offers some of the best panoramic views in the city, while the Skywalk adds an exciting and unforgettable adventure without being overwhelmingly scary.
If you’re visiting Chongqing for the first time, I’d definitely put this on your list. Arrive before sunset, stay until dark, and enjoy watching one of China’s most futuristic cities come to life.
