If there is one street in Bangkok that you might have heard of then this would definitely be Khao San Road. Located a few kilometres outside of reach of the skytrain and subway and best accessible by Tuk Tuk, it used to be a major rice market back in its days.
Nowadays it is mostly known for cheap accommodation, food and a place for backpackers to get wasted. But if you are spending more time in Thailand you might still include it in your Thailand itinerary.
During the day Bangkok’s Khao San Road is just a short street with loads of souvenir stands, little shops, restaurants and beauty saloons. It is not far away from several temples such as Wat Intharawihan or Wat Pho, which is better known under the name Temple of reclining Buddha, and also only a short Tuk Tuk ride away from the Grand Palace.
There are definitely some attractions surrounding the area but this is not the main reason why backpackers like to stay in walking distance to Khao San Road.

What you can expect on Bangkok’s Khao San Road
At night-time the music is slowly getting louder and louder and all the bars will open its doors. There will be street food including people selling all kinds of scorpions and insects and every two metres someone will try to sell you some sort of alcohol or trying to get you to visit a ping-pong show.
For a bucket you will usually be paying around 150 – 200 Baht, for a Chang beer around 80 Baht and street food starts at 30 Baht. On Khao San Road you will usually find younger people, mostly backpackers. You will barely meet any Thai people who come to party here. However, if you are fine with this street mostly existing for tourism then you will be able to meet some nice people from all around the world.
At around 10/11pm it will get super busy on the streets. A little later people will start to dance everywhere. It is truly insane and at some point the whole street will be crowded and full with people dancing, waving with buckets or trying out laughing gas. At 2am the music will shut down and the street has to be cleared again.
Usually bars will close at the same time and if you still want to go somewhere after you will have to move the party to your hostel if you can get away with it. A night out on Khao San Road is definitely a lot of fun and worth a visit, so if you have a spare night you most definitely should consider giving it a try.
